Off to a great start!

Hi Everyone!

Well, it's official!

Fishing season is off to a great start.

Now that the lake is ice-free, we are able to access all areas of the lake.

Last weekend we had the distinct pleasure of meeting 6 year old Brittian who showed his Dad, Mike, a thing or two about fishing with a novice.
First of all, youth anglers have the energy and stamina to rival any seasoned pro. Brittian wanted to stay out as late as he possibly could. I believe he would rather fish than eat!
Secondly, youth anglers have a canny knack of being able to keep track of how many fish are caught each day. He was happy to share with us that he out-fished Dad one day by catching 58 fish!
And third, youth anglers learn fast and fish hard but also take great pics and can even net a fish for Dad (providing it doesn't out-weigh him).

I think Dad has a hard-core life-long angling buddy here!
Way to go Brittian!

Hi Everyone!

GAME ON!!

Special shout out to Eileen who took a little tumble yesterday only to land this magnificent specimen today!
What a beautiful 22 1/2 pound lunker!!

Way to go Owen! Thanks for this great pic!
Looks like we are track for another fabulous season!

So, you will see in the second pic of the lake below, there is a little fog hanging out on the east side of the lake. Due to the wind yesterday the remaining ice made it's way to the south east corner and stayed there last night resulting in a little fog as the sun cam up.

For the most part the vast majority of the lake is ice-free and all areas should be accessible by the day's end.

May 24, 2014

Hi Everyone!

Well, from here it looks like we're are ice-free but with this strong west wind, there is still some ice out there hanging on the west side of the lake. All prime fishing spots are open. 31 degrees yesterday sure helped knock it down.

We're hoping to be able to announce complete ice-free conditions tomorrow.
We should know for sure since the wind will change to a north west wind this evening and overnight.
The finish line is in sight folks!

Hi Everyone!

Well, we're almost there!
Within a day or two, we should see the lake ice-free.
The whole southern shore is open and open water just beyond our point!

Our staff had an afternoon of fishing in our bay yesterday.
They caught lots and the biggest was reported to be over 40 inches.
Of course it was released, so the big one is waiting for your arrival!

May 19, 2014

Hi Everyone!

Not a lot of change on the ice today.
Just showing signs of continued break down.

I heard that Christina Lake appears to be ice-free.
We believe the ice sunk overnight last night.
What this means to us is that we could possibly see this happen here, which wouldn't be the worst thing!
(Caution to everyone if you're on Christina over the next few days. Stay safe.)

Forecast for Monday May 19, 2014

Daytime high: +17 Celsius
Nighttime low: +7 Celsius
Winds: 10E turning to 10S

If you look closely at the pics, you can see our dock hands are busy getting the boats ready for this weekend.
If you are booked for this weekend, feel free to touch base with me at the lodge, if you have any questions.

May 18, 2014

Hi Everyone,

Another lovely day of ice melting on Winefred Lake.
It is much warmer this morning and we noticed a big difference to the ice.
In our bay, at least, the ice is completely covered in slushy water.
That should help thin it out.
We are hoping to see some real difference to the bay by the end of the day.

Weather for Sunday May 18, 2014

Daytime high: +16 Celsius
Nighttime low: +6 Celsius
Winds: 15E

(5-day forecast is saying temperatures are on the rise for the next 5 days.)

Hi Everyone!

Just managed to get a couple of pictures taken before my batteries went dead.
You get the picture, right?

First pike of the season was caught off the dock last night by our new dockhand, Jarett.
It was just a little guy but at least they're making their way to open water to warm up.

May 15, 2014

Hi Everyone!

I would like to thank everyone who is following along with the progress of watching the ice melt. I guess we're all in it together. I know it has been painfully slow.

On the upside, we can now see a decent amount of water along the south shore to both the east and west of our dock. The birds have finally found some water.

Yesterday we saw hundreds of geese flying in honking all the way.
Makes me thing they're saying, "Dang it...we're too early".

Forecast for Thursday May 15, 2014:
Daytime high: +12 Celsius
Nighttime low: +3 Celsius
Wind: 20N

Hi Everyone!

Weather for Wednesday May 14, 2014
Daytime High: +19 Celsius
Nighttime low: +8 Celsius

Rain expected overnight: 5-10 mm

This is good for melting but we still have a long way to go!
We will have a better idea and maybe even a guess by Friday as to when we might be able to get the boats in the water. Keep your fingers crossed for sooner rather than later.

May 12, 2014

Hi Everyone!

Did youever see the movie, "Groundhog Day"? That's the one where the guy wakes up morning after morning and it's Groundhog Day everyday.
That's the feeling here!
But little by little, there is melting happening.

The one thing that is different today is that the weather is looking really good for the next week or so. Looks like our nighttime lows will be above zero after tonight and the daytime highs are warming up.
We are even scheduled to get a few days rain or showers with the wind direction changing daily.
All of this adds up to ice-melting conditions.

 Monday May 12, 2014
Expected Daytime High: +12 Celsius
Expected Nighttime Low: -1 Celsius
Wind: 10N

I'm just glad I'm not a duck looking for water on Winefred Lake today!

May 11, 2014

Hi Everyone!

Here's how things look from here!

We were happy to see a little more water at the dock this morning!

Daytime High: +10 Celsius
Tonight's Low: -1 Celsius
Winds: NW 10

Eddie couldn't take it anymore! So he took matters into his own hands!

Seriously though, under the thin layer of ice at the dock there's more ice still frozen in the sand underneath.
Looks like we have a while to go before we are ice-free.
I did notice that our predicted temperatures have gone up for the next week or so, which should help.
